Is the helicopter more dangerous than the aircraft?

It is important to let go the idea that in the event of an engine failure, the helicopter will fall like a rock… In fact, the flight characteristics of the helicopter allow it to land on any surface without an engine.

To land without troubles, the airplane needs a long terrain clear of obstacles, which is impossible to find in a forest. On the other hand, the helicopter only needs a small clearing of about 15 meters in diameter and those can be found aplenty in forests. In that sense, the helicopter is much safer than the airplane… especially above rough terrain.

How often are our helicopters inspected?

All of Passport Helico’s are subjected to regular and stringent inspections. Those inspections are sanctioned by Transport Canada and the results can be found in the public documents which can be consulted at the Transport Canada office.

As a measure of transparency, Passport Helico allows anyone to consult the maintenance and inspection documents of any of our aircraft by simple request.

Can bad weather prevent a helicopter from flying?

Yes, as for any other aircraft. However, the helicopter can safely fly with weather minima below those required for airplanes under visual flight rules. Indeed, the flight characteristics of the helicopter allow it to fly real slow real low. It can also fly backwards, sideways and even stop in flight, tricks that airplanes will never be able to do.

So, in case of bad weather, only helicopters can follow roads, railroad tracks, streams, or power lines at very low altitude.

If the weather turns for the worst, a helicopter pilot can at all times land the aircraft more or less everywhere and wait for better conditions to resume the flight.

Is it noisy onboard?

The noise inside the cabin is comparable to the one inside a light airplane. If you’ve never been inside an airplane before, it’s a little bit noisier than in a car.

Headsets (with earphones and a microphone) are provided for the duration of flight, which allows you to talk with the pilot.

Can we smoke onboard?

Passport Helico doesn’t allow smoking on board the helicopters. This is for the safety of the flight and the health and comfort of all aboard, great and small!

At what speed do helicopters fly?

Every aircraft has its own set of technical characteristics, but the helicopters we fly cruise between 0 and 200 km/h.

For a photo flight, the pilots will fly slowly and will even stop the helicopter in the air (hovering). Meanwhile, for a transport flight from point to point, they will fly much faster.
